KNM (Knowledge of Dutch Society) is not a language exam, and that's precisely why many candidates underestimate it.
Why KNM is often underestimated
Since 1 July 2025, KNM consists of 40 questions across 8 official themes, with a pass mark of 24, in 45 minutes, at A2 language level. Because it doesn't test language skill but knowledge of Dutch society, candidates often read the answer options too quickly, assuming it's straightforward.
The 8 themes briefly explained
KNM tests knowledge across the following eight themes:
- Work and income
- Social norms and values
- Housing
- Health and healthcare
- History and geography
- Institutions
- Government and the rule of law
- Education and upbringing
The biggest pitfall: confusing similar topics
The most common mistake is mixing up topics that look alike, for example which authority is responsible for which regulation. On the surface two answer options can seem to say almost the same thing, when there's actually an important difference in them.
How do you tackle a KNM question smartly?
Take the time to actually read every answer option before you choose, even if the first one already seems likely. Because KNM is not a language exam, it's really about precision in knowledge, not language intuition.
