KNM exam practice: 8 themes, summaries and practice questions

Since 1 July 2025, the KNM exam (Knowledge of Dutch Society) consists of 40 multiple-choice questions across eight official themes, with an official pass mark of 24. The 8 KNM themes

• Work and income — job applications, tax and benefits.
• Social norms and values — how you treat others and what's customary in the Netherlands.
• Housing — renting, buying, insurance and the neighbourhood.

• History and geography — key events and how the Netherlands is laid out.
• Institutions — which authority is responsible for what, from municipality to state.
• Government and the rule of law — how the Netherlands is governed and how the rule of law works.
• Education and upbringing — the school system, from primary school to university.
