Civic integration exam B1: how much time should you set aside to pass?

One of the most common questions is how long it takes to prepare for the civic integration exam. There's no fixed answer: it depends heavily on your starting level of Dutch and how much time you can free up each week. Still, you can make a realistic estimate.

What determines how long you'll need

• Your starting level. Can you already hold a simple conversation, or are you starting close to zero? That alone can mean a difference of months.
• Your available time per week. Practising half an hour a few times a week goes slower than setting aside a fixed moment every day.
• How many parts you still need to pass. Some people have already passed some parts and only need to work on the rest.

A rule of thumb for the language parts

As a guideline: practising in a structured way a few times a week, three to four times, half an hour each time, working through all the grammar and language lessons towards B1 typically takes a few months. Doing it less often, say once or twice a week, can easily stretch towards half a year or longer. This is a rule of thumb, not a guarantee: everyone learns at a different pace.

KNM often takes less time than you'd think

KNM doesn't require language skill, but knowledge of how the Netherlands works. Because of that, you can often finish this part faster than the language parts: a few weeks of focused work through the eight themes is enough for many people, especially if you combine it with regularly doing practice questions instead of just reading text.

A practical step-by-step plan

• Schedule a fixed, repeatable moment each week instead of waiting for "whenever I have time".
• Start with the part you feel least sure about: that usually needs the most repetition.
• Take a mock exam as soon as you've worked through a set of lessons, so you know exactly where you stand against the official pass mark.
