How many times can you fail the civic integration exam?

Short answer: you can retake an exam part as many times as needed, there's no limit on the number of attempts. What does have a limit is time: your integration deadline. Those two things get mixed up often, and that's exactly where it goes wrong.

How many attempts do you get per part?

If you fail Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking or KNM, you simply register again for that one part. Parts you've already passed stay valid: you never have to redo something you've already completed. The only downside of a new attempt is that you pay exam fees again for that part.

What actually matters: your integration deadline

If you're required to integrate, DUO gives you a deadline by which you must pass all mandatory parts, usually three years from the moment your integration duty started. It's not the number of attempts that's the hard limit, it's that deadline. In principle you could fail Speaking ten times, as long as you eventually pass before your deadline ends.

What if you miss the deadline?

• DUO can impose a fine of up to €1,250 if you exceed your integration deadline without a valid reason.
• After a fine, you usually get two extra years to still pass.
• If you have a good reason for the delay, for example illness or the birth of a child, DUO can also extend the deadline without a fine.
• If you disagree with a fine, you can lodge an objection with DUO within six weeks.

Every retake costs time, exam fees, and, let's be honest, motivation too. The best way to avoid that isn't working harder, it's working more precisely: know how you score on practice questions matched to the official pass mark before your exam day, so nothing catches you off guard.
