The civic integration deadline feels like a looming deadline for many people. The good news: you often have more options than you think, as long as you take action on time.
How much time exactly do you have?
In principle you have 3 years to integrate. That deadline starts running from the date you entered the Netherlands with an MVV (provisional residence permit), or from the date DUO informed you that you must do civic integration.
Requesting an extension: how and when?
It is possible to extend your deadline, for example due to force majeure, and in some cases after completing 300 hours of study. This does not happen automatically: you must actively request the extension from DUO and show why you need more time.
What happens if you miss the deadline?
If you miss the deadline without a valid reason, DUO can impose a fine that can be substantial. Even after a fine, you still get extra time to do civic integration, it doesn't just stop. The fine policy for status holders has been regularly debated in recent years, so always check the current state of affairs at DUO (duo.nl) rather than relying on what you may have heard.

The key lesson: don't wait until the deadline is in sight. Request an extension actively from DUO well before the end of your deadline if it becomes clear you won't make it. That is more effective than trying to explain afterwards why it didn't work out.
