Since the Civic Integration Act 2021, civic integration is no longer a single fixed path for everyone. There are three learning routes, and which fits you depends on your situation and your learnability.
Who decides your learning route?
Not just you: the municipality decides together with you which learning route you will follow, based on a learnability assessment. This assessment determines how quickly you are expected to learn Dutch, and that partly determines which route is realistic for you.
The B1 route
The B1 route is aimed at Dutch at minimum B1 level (in some cases scaled down to A2) and culminates in language exams and knowledge exams (KNM and Work & Participation). This is the route that Inburgerify aligns with: Programme I (B1) and KNM.
The Education route
The Education route is a full-time program lasting on average one and a half years, aimed at progressing to vocational, higher or university education. The language level is B1 or B2. This route suits those with high learnability who want to continue their studies after integration.
The Z route
The Z route (self-reliance route) is intended for those with lower learnability, where A2 cannot be achieved in all areas within the 3-year deadline. The focus is on managing in daily life; an exam is not mandatory on this route, though it is allowed.
Can you switch routes?
A chosen learning route is not set in stone forever: under certain conditions, the municipality can decide to adjust a route later, for example if learnability turns out to be different than initially assessed. Speak to your municipality about this.
